  • Module 5 focuses on sociological and legal aspects
  • Module 6 delves into economics
  • Module 7 offers students to conduct a concrete research project
  • Modules 8 to 11 are based on sport for development, sport policy and sport systems and focus on both current research questions and professional examples
  • Module 12 applies these combined skills in self-guided research as reflected in the Master’s Thesis

The SPEACH Project aims to educate future sport professionals by developing ‘Health Enhancing Physical Activity’ (HEPA) modules that can be integrated in existing Physical Education Teaching Educations and Sport Coaching Educations. The consortium behind the project, consisting of ten institutes and networks from seven EU countries, intends to have these sport professionals ultimately stimulate their young pupils and have an health enhancing effect on European society in an age where sedentariness is a cross-national problem. Co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission, the SPEACH Project will run until the end of 2017.

Professor Johan de Jong (Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen): “The SPEACH Project was considered a best practise in the first cohort of Erasmus+/sport projects, partially because of the high potential impact it has. We have specifically chosen to develop modules to be integrated in existing education to be able to reach high numbers of future professionals without changing the educational system in any of the countries. By combining knowledge from England, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Lithuania, Denmark, and The Netherlands in the shape of experts from ten institutes and networks in the field of sport education and coaching the project has European-wide potential.”

To understand the European needs from the field of ‘Physical Education Teaching Education’ (PETE) and ‘Sport Coaching Education’ (SCE) a 3-step approach was developed. 21 educational institutes in the 7 participating countries where targeted to survey their students on HEPA related matters. During the bi-annual conference of the European Network of Sport Science, Education & Employment (ENSSEE) an international focus group of experts reflected on survey results and as a final step multiple national experts in each participating country were interviewed. The full results of this 3-step approach are expected later this year and will be used for the development of HEPA modules.

The consortium, of which the European Network of Sport Science, Education & Employment (ENSSEE) is an important part, is currently focused on analysing the aforementioned results and increasingly on the module development. After this development next steps to take include teacher training, piloting, reviewing, and validating. To stay updated or to find out more about the project visit the SPEACH website or follow @SPEACHproject on Twitter. Interested parties can contact the project organisation through the website.

The European Network of Sport Education (ENSE) – formerly known as European Network of Sport
Science, Education and Employment (ENSSEE) – is an international non-profit organisation established
in 1989 and registered in France, focused on sport education & training, and its relation with sport
science and employment. It is a network of educational/training institutions, open to individual
members, intended as the ideal meeting place for all stakeholders to develop synergies, ideas and
common initiatives.

ENSE has offices in Rome (University of Rome “Foro Italico” – the Italian Sport University), Cologne
(German Sport University) and Vienna (University of Vienna), and a membership involving all EU
countries and neighboring regions. Its Committees cover a variety of areas and involve well-known experts from all countries and domains.

In its 26 years of existence ENSE has come to bring together the community of education & training institutions and other stakeholders, promoting an increasing harmonization, dialogue and exchanges, and several cooperative programs, which have in many cases become standard references.  Examples are the European Qualification Framework for the five levels of Coach Education, European Masters and Intensive Programmes, the Nomenclature of Sport Economic Activities (NEARS) and Occupations (NEORS), or the Report on Sport Employment in Europe, supported by the EU former DG X in 1999. Its Thematic Network AEHESIS – Aligning a European Higher Educational Structure in Sport Science (2002-2007), was nominated by the EU an Erasmus Success Story. Through it, the Network brought together some 90 organisations from 29 countries in a 4-year-long effort resulting in the extensive mapping of existing study programs and the design of reference curricula in the four identified main areas: Physical Education, Coaching, Health & Fitness, Sport Management.

The Network also started several Joint Curricula that played a major role in promoting mobility and cooperation, and set the scene for the development of full teaching programs with joint degrees, such as the European Master in Health and Physical Activity (Rome-Vienna-Cologne-Odense-Oslo), increasingly successful since over ten years, or the recent Bachelor in Physical Activity and Lifestyle (PALC), etc. This, and the reference curricula designed through AEHESIS, have also been instrumental in several Tempus JEPs and other EU interventions promoting the Bologna Process and an upgrading of sport science in EU neighboring areas, such as Egypt and the Balkans. ENSE is currently contributing to the Tempus project SPEED (Sport Professions: Education, Employment & Development) and the Erasmus+ project SPEACH (Sport , Physical Education and Coaching in Health).

Many of the existing organisations in the European sport sector have actually derived from ENSE, the oldest umbrella organisation of an originally unitary area, which maintains with all excellent relations.

More information about ENSE's history can be found here, while publications are available here.

The European Network of Sport Education (ENSE) is proud to launch its new website. Formerly known as the European Network of Sport Science, Education and Employment (ENSSEE), ENSE is an international non-profit organisation focused on sport science, education and employment.

In its 26 years, ENSE has brought together institutions from across Europe and beyond, increasing harmonization, dialogue and exchanges — often setting standards within the sport education and training sector in the process.

The new website continues in that tradition, providing a platform for members to connect and share their work with the larger sporting and European communities.

“The new ENSE website will inform all partners and members about ongoing projects and new initiatives in the sport education sector around Europe” says Dr. Karen Petry, current President Elect of ENSE.

New features include institutional and project profiles, giving readers direct insights into ENSE members and their activities. In addition, members will be able to directly share stories through our website, helping promote the benefits of sport training and education. Along with these new features, up-to-date resources for academics and practitioners will continue to be made available.

Facebook and LinkedIn pages will also be used to promote stories and activities, as well as allow for a platform to directly engage with partners and readers.
